I have not seen a lot of blog posts about DIY carnival or circus-themed parties so I thought of posting my son’s birthday party here.
Nope.. I did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on standard or commercially made decorations so I had to to think of ways to realize the birthday theme on a tight budget.
After deciding on the theme, i focused on looking for materials with specific colors in mind.. white, red, blue and yellow materials will do.
I browsed the local Dollar Tree and 99 Cents Stores for my materials, oh how I love these stores! I can spend a day inside these stores looking for some thrifty deals.
Recycle? Recycle? I used empty appliance boxes for the photo booth and other party stuff, and i was glad too to find 1/2 sheet of peg board in the garage that i used for the ‘pop the baloon’ game.
I enjoyed planning, buying and creating the party materials and my son said he had so much fun on his fourth birthday…for me, that’s a job well done.:)
PS estimated cost for this backyard party is about $190 excluding food bought for grown ups (plus there’s plenty of materials left for recycle and reuse in the future)
Caramel apples from Delightfully Delicious Candy Apples for $3.00 and cupcakes from Ralphs with toppers and stickers bought on sale from Michael’s helped with the theme.
Mango and Triple Berry Fruit smoothies turned popsicles using shot glasses were a hit with the kids.
And what’s a carnival without cotton candies? Got the cotton candy machine from Cost Plus World Market on sale fro $29.99 ( renting it locally would have cost me $50)
The kids played games like Ring Toss, Pop the Balloon, Hula Hoop, Lemonade Drinking and Throw the Pie Contests where they earned tickets that they can use to buy prizes.
So sorry Mr Clown. Violence not intended..blame it on the theme!
Bought the clown pinata from Amazon for $14.16; a dozen clown noses for $7.99 and 100 foot multicolor pennant banner for $7.49
Instead of a birthday cake, I ordered a giant Clown-themed cupcake from Bake You Happy for $20
Found some racks too from my husband’s unfinished storage solutions to display the ‘Prizes’. Spent about $35.00 for various prizes with prices ranging from $1-$3 fro Target and the Dollars Stores.
and more photo ops!!
